[About this rating](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/rating/true)
In late January and early February 2026, people on social media [asserted](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1369116448254691/posts/1461037715729230/) ([archived](https://perma.cc/C33S-YKXA)) that the city of Minneapolis had been officially nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. By then, the city and its metro area had been the focus of a [federal immigration operation](https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/12/04/ice-arrests-worst-worst-criminal-illegal-aliens-during-operation-metro-surge) by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump for more than a month.
According to one [Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/1qv31tg/the_people_of_minneapolis_have_been_nominated_for/) ([archived](https://archive.ph/zdqVM)), "The people of Minneapolis have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The first time a city's population has ever been nominated."
The claim also spread on social media sites such as [Threads](https://www.threads.com/@amay.a100/post/DUQe9bYDW-G/video-the-nation-nominates-the-people-of-minneapolis-for-the-nobel-peace-prize) ([archived](https://archive.ph/MkPcO)), [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/meetminneapolis_minneapolis-2026nobelpeaceprize-nationmag-activity-7423044956753215488-Fn53/) ([archived](https://archive.ph/qR8Qe)) and [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reels/DUQsikrEQRF/) ([archived](https://archive.ph/1YKnd)).
The claim was true. The editors of The Nation, a progressive magazine, [formally nominated](https://www.thenation.com/article/activism/the-nation-nominates-minneapolis-for-the-nobel-peace-prize/) the city of Minneapolis for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nation's editors declared their intent to nominate the city with a Jan. 28, 2026, article in which they said they were working to make the submission ahead of the [Jan. 31 deadline](https://web.archive.org/web/20260118171448/https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/nobel-peace-prize/nomination/) for nominations.
The article shared The Nation's letter addressing the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which it submitted with the nomination. The letter, an excerpt of which is below, explained The Nation's reasoning for nominating the city:
> In response to these horrific developments, elected officials, clergy, and labor leaders in Minneapolis and Minnesota have called for nonviolent protest, in accordance with the US Constitution's promise that Americans have a right to assemble and petition for the redress of grievances. The people of Minneapolis and neighboring communities have answered that call with peaceful mass demonstrations that have drawn tens of thousands of protesters to the streets in frigid weather. They have coupled their cry for federal agents to withdraw from Minneapolis with chants that declare, "No hate, no fear… immigrants are welcome here!"
>
> The people of Minneapolis have also engaged in mutual support and care for neighbors who have been targeted because of the color of their skin or the language they speak. They have delivered groceries to residents who are afraid to leave their homes and provided financial support to neighbors who haven't been able to go to their places of work because of the federal assault on their rights and humanity.
Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize are valid only if the nominator meets [certain criteria](https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/nobel-peace-prize/nomination/criteria-for-nominators) to make them eligible. Valid nominators include government officials, university professors and past Nobel Peace Prize winners, among others.
When asked over email whether The Nation met the criteria to submit a valid nomination, spokesperson Caitlin Graf said contributing editor Jon Wiener submitted the nomination and the letter on behalf of The Nation. Wiener is a [professor emeritus of history at the University of California, Irvine](https://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile/?facultyId=2512), which makes him eligible to submit a Nobel Peace Prize nomination under the category of "University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion."
Graf also forwarded Snopes an email Wiener received from the Norwegian Nobel Committee confirming his nomination had been successfully submitted.
As for whether Minneapolis is the first city to ever be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize? That's a claim that's impossible to confirm one way or the other.
Although a nominator is free to announce who they're nominating, the Nobel Committee itself [does not divulge the names of any nominees](https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/nobel-peace-prize/nomination/confidentiality) until 50 years have passed since the prize was awarded. And while many nominators make public their nominees, the Nobel Prize Committee receives [hundreds of nominations](https://web.archive.org/web/20260118171448/https://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/nobel-peace-prize/nomination/#:~:text=The%20Norwegian%20Nobel%20Institute%20registered%20a%20total%20of%20338%20candidates%20for%20the%202025%C2%A0peace%20prize%2C%20of%20which%20244%20are%20individuals%20and%2094%20are%20organisations.) each year, meaning there are many nominations the public doesn't know about from the past five decades.
What we do know is that as of January 2026, there have been [143 winners of the Nobel Peace Prize](https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/lists/all-nobel-peace-prizes/) since its inception in 1901. Of those 143 winners, 31 were organizations and none were municipalities.
