# The Dean Browning Alt Account Incident
## What Happened
On November 10, 2020, Dean Browning, a Republican politician from Pennsylvania, tweeted:
> "I'm a black gay guy and I can personally say that Obama did nothing for me. My life only changed a little bit and it was for the worse. Everything is so much better under Trump though."
The issue? Dean Browning is a white, straight man.
## The Fallout
The tweet quickly went viral, with people suspecting that Browning had meant to post it from a sockpuppet (fake) account but accidentally used his main one instead.
Browning deleted the tweet and later claimed he was quoting a message he had received from a follower. However, things got even weirder.
## The "Dan Purdy" Account
Shortly after, a Twitter account named **Dan Purdy** (@DanPurdy322) appeared, claiming to be the "black gay guy" behind the tweet. The account posted a video where a Black man (who identified himself as Dan Purdy) insisted that Browning wasn’t lying.
But internet sleuths quickly uncovered that "Dan Purdy" was actually **William “Byl” Holte**, the adopted nephew of legendary singer **Patti LaBelle**. After this revelation, the Dan Purdy account was suspended.
## The Aftermath
The whole situation became an infamous case of suspected sockpuppeting in politics. Despite Browning’s explanation, most people believed he had accidentally exposed himself trying to use a fake account to bolster his arguments.
The incident remains a classic example of how social media can quickly turn a mistake into a viral spectacle.
