Andrew Taake, a 36-year-old Houston resident who was recently pardoned by President Donald Trump for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, has been rearrested on charges of online solicitation of a minor. The charge dates back to 2016, when Taake allegedly sent sexually explicit messages to an undercover officer posing as a 15-year-old girl. At the time of the Capitol riot, he was out on a $20,000 bail related to this charge.
In June 2024, Taake was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting police officers with bear spray and a metal whip during the Capitol attack. He was released from federal custody on January 20, 2025, following a mass pardon issued by President Trump for individuals involved in the January 6 events. However, this federal pardon did not cover his state-level charges.
Upon his release, the Harris County District Attorney's Office in Texas sought to detain Taake on the outstanding 2016 charge. After a surveillance operation confirmed his location in Leon County, Texas, he was arrested on February 6, 2025. His bond in Harris County has been revoked, and authorities are coordinating his transfer to the Harris County Jail.
This case highlights the complexities of legal jurisdictions and the limitations of presidential pardons, which do not extend to state-level charges.
